At this stage I don’t want to go spending a fortune on one of those chairs that lifts up, as we don’t know how long I will be in this state. Meantime I am trying to work out what to get to help me to get out of my chair. I had thought a walking frame or something, but I don’t know if there is something more suitable. All advice will be gratefully received.

If you think you will need it only short term then a walking frame would probably do the job fine.
Many chairs at home are very low, you can get something to raise the height of your chair which makes it easier to stand without help. I’ll edit if I can find one similar online.
When you are ready to stand up, shuffle your bottom as far forward on the seat as you can, again it makes standing easier.

Yes. I guess you can build a power chair lift. However, it needs a lot of work, materials and tools. It needs some screwing and hammering. You should plan well on what to do with it. Or else you’ll be having a big problem.

My Grandparents downsized last winter and we tried to sell their chair lift by taking out an add in the buy and sell and not putting a price but instead noted sale to best offer. We also dropped off notices to several pharmacies and medical supply stores.

No one called.

We ended up donating the lift to salvation army a month later.

i live in an upstairs condo unit–moving is not an option–but at times i have trouble on the stairs.

if i can ever afford it–i would like to put in one of those chairs that glide up the stairs…

a friend told me the fire marshall would never allow it–becuase teh stairwell isn’t wide enough–i would get the kind where teh chair folds up…the stairwell is 3 ft wide–it is my private stairwell–not a common area…

would i be prohibited from installing it?
it can be stored on the landing..many of teh pics i’ve seen online show a stair well no wider tahn 3 foot
i don’thave a landlord=its a condo

and teh ADA is crap–the govt refuses to enforce it–and i can’t afford a lawyer
even if i did have a landlord–it would not be a reasonable accommodation to have him make modificatiosn to teh stairs–at most it would require him to give me prefernce to a 1st floor unit–and it woul dbe FHA–not ADA–ADA doesn’t apply to housing
ITS A CONDO–not an APARTMENT–i would not need to remove it unless it was a ocndition of teh sale between me and teh buyer……

and teh quetsion is about the size of teh satirs-being allowed by teh FD and PD–not by accessibiliy/non discrimination laws

when you put strain on it ? If so it could need to be greased up. try greasing up the moving joints/wheels/guides.

Yes, because there are so many different kinds of lifts, and vehicles, and chairs – it is best that you consult with SEVERAL mobility specialists. They are profit businesses that are expert in matching the right lift to your needs, but most only deal with certain brands.

It is possible that the vehicle you currently own cannot be fitted with a lift. Whether or not your soon to be stepdaughter can be transferred out of her wheelchair into the car’s regular seat – or a car seat will also effect your decision.

If it is an option, I strongly recommend you get a lift that comes from the rear of your vehicle so you do not have to worry about extra wide parking spaces.

Personally I find the brand BRAUN is excellent.

You will find that it’s much cheaper and cost effective to build a Handicapped Ramp rather than buy a Wheelchair Lift. There are dozens of companies that sell electric lifts for outdoors use on the Internet.Good Luck……
